MIKEL WIEST
MIKEL WIEST — HEAD COACH, GENERAL MANAGER & OWNER
Driving accountability, development, and leadership at The U.
“Coaching isn’t just about winning hockey games — it’s about shaping players into leaders, teammates, and role models beyond the rink.”
Mikel Wiest leads Lethbridge United as Head Coach, General Manager, and Owner of the academy. A proud Lethbridge native, Mikel combines his competitive background and mentorship experience to build a culture of growth, accountability, and purpose at The U.
Before founding Lethbridge United, Mikel played four seasons in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) before earning a scholarship opportunity to play ACHA Division 1 hockey at Adrian College in Michigan. His years on the ice shaped his philosophy that success begins with discipline, respect, and hard work.
Today, he applies those lessons to developing 18U AAA athletes — preparing them to compete at the highest levels while becoming strong, confident, and responsible young men. Under his leadership, Lethbridge United continues to raise the standard for player development in the Junior Prospects Hockey League (JPHL).

His international career defines his coaching approach — emphasizing defensive structure, composure under pressure, and the daily habits required to perform at the professional level.
“My goal is to pass on what I’ve learned at the highest levels — showing players that consistency, discipline, and hard work can take them anywhere.” — Daryl Boyle
At The U, Daryl’s mentorship helps athletes understand the discipline, detail, and mindset needed to excel beyond junior hockey, inspiring every player to pursue excellence with confidence and purpose.

Turning game film and skills training into measurable performance.

Specializing in video analysis and individual skill development, Jay transforms complex game situations into teachable opportunities that translate directly to faster, smarter on-ice execution.
“Video and skill work let us slow the game down — so when players hit the ice, their reads and execution speed up.” — Jay Merkley
Through focused feedback and repetition, Jay helps athletes refine their habits, improve awareness, and build the confidence to elevate their performance shift after shift.
Brendon Benson
BRENDON BENSON — ASSISTANT COACH
Building discipline and detail from local roots to elite hockey.
Born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta, Brendon Benson brings a hometown commitment to player development at Lethbridge United. A WHL draft pick of the Victoria Royals, Brendon went on to play Junior A hockey in the AJHL with the Calgary Canucks and in the SJHL with the Kindersley Klippers — experience that shaped his understanding of what it takes to compete at the next level.
With a background as both a player and coach across Southern Alberta, Brendon focuses on the fundamentals that translate to every level — from wall play and puck battles to composure at game speed. His teaching style ensures athletes build habits that last beyond the rink.
“My job is to sharpen the little details — because when players master the small things, the big moments take care of themselves.” — Brendon Benson
At The U, Brendon’s detail-driven approach strengthens discipline, decision-making, and competitiveness, laying the foundation for long-term success in every athlete he mentors.
